Everyday joy · concrete details

Family Chaos is My Favorite Chaos

Dad’s laughing at something dumb, Rusty’s asleep on my leg that’s now numb, Isaac’s playing games, how did you guess, Mom just woke up and her hair is a mess. Grandpa just sent me a random meme, Now Isaac’s eating straight whipped cream, My family’s chaos, but they bring me joy, They also make me really annoyed. I guess I have the average fam, Like a cuddle of otters fighting over a clam.

— Abigail Wilkes · Consider the Lilies

Notice how this works

A numb leg, a sleepy dog, and straight whipped cream turn “my family is funny” into a scene you can picture. Love and annoyance can belong in the same poem.
